Finding Life Purpose

Finding life purpose is more difficult than many people realize. If you ask people what their purpose is in life, the majority of the time they will give you a vague list of goals or duties that they have, for example being a good parent or being a good person. All of these things are important, but they are very generic.  If you want to find a purpose for your life that you are enthusiastic about and that makes you realize you are living for something bigger than yourself then you need something more specific.

In his book “Over the Top” motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said: “You will never succeed as a wandering generality, you must become a meaningful specific.” So follow these simple steps if you want to find your specific purpose here on earth.

Step 1 in Finding Life Purpose: Selective Ignorance

Many people will try to tell you what you should or should not do in your life. However, finding your purpose and growing, both personally and spiritually, is your responsibility – not theirs. So first you need to learn to filter out all the noise that keeps you from hearing your inner voice. While other peoples input and outside sources can be valuable, when it comes to finding your purpose you need to listen to yourself first and foremost. Once you can filter these things out, sometimes called “selective ignorance”, you can move onto the next step in finding your purpose.

Step 2 in Finding Life Purpose: Start Listening to Yourself

When you’re finding your purpose it’s important to be more aware of yourself. A great way of doing this is to keep a daily journal of your thoughts. Many great historical achievers wrote their thoughts and reflections down in personal letters and journals.

Writing focuses then mind and allows you to organize the jumble of thoughts in your head. So write them down and also write down the answers to questions like “What is one thing I would want people to remember me for?” or “What is one important thing I want to accomplish in my life?” As you start to understand your own thought processes and listen to your inner voice the answers to these questions will become much clearer.

Step 3 in Finding Life Purpose: Go After It

As the great writer Jack London once said: “You can’t wait for inspiration to come to you; you must go after it with a club.” This is also true when it comes to finding your purpose: you must look for materials and feed your mind with things which will help you to understand your own desires.

No matter what it is that you want to do with your life, chances are that someone else has already done it – or at least something similar. So do some reading and research into the things you are interested in. This, combined with your journaling, will lead you to succeed in finding life purpose.
